However, his cautions were about using technology with awareness rather than rejecting it. He championed “media literacy” – the ability to critique how messages are framed. Consider the US election of 2025. Yet his warnings weren’t about rejecting technology but about using it mindfully. Voters will need Postman’s tools to separate fact from fiction because they will be inundated with polarized content and AI-generated advertisements. Postman is dismissed by his detractors as a Luddite or a nostalgic who longs for a simpler time.

Candidates are now livestreaming stunts, and policy papers are gathering dust. Additionally, he understood the political power of entertainment. I observed council members angling cameras before responding to inquiries while covering local politics for a local newspaper. The meeting turned into a theater, with the subplot being governance. We learned to evaluate leaders based more on charisma than skill from reality TV. Postman was not part of my intellectual world at that point. Postman’s own disinterest in the developments in television may have been the primary factor dividing the generations.

At the time, I had completed my dissertation on television history and culture. His writings had a far bigger influence on a different generation of academics who were born after television became a commercial enterprise but before the Internet became popular. I now realize that it was an odd combination of postmodernist theory and popular media, but it was perfectly appropriate for the fields of cultural studies and television. My first book had just been accepted for publication (in a series on cultural history published by the University of Illinois Press) when I read Amusing Ourselves to Death during my final year of graduate school.

Neil Postman has written a number of books about contemporary technology and how it affects society. What books has Neil Postman written? Amusing Ourselves to Death, one of his most well-known works, examines the connection between politics and television in the late 1980s. Neil Postman reminds us that the media we choose is never neutral because it influences our beliefs, thoughts, and even personalities. Neil Postman reminds us that the medium we choose is never neutral – it shapes what we believe, how we think, and even who we become.

has been translated into numerous languages and is regarded as a classic on the subject of technology and society. He is best known for his book “Technopoly” which discusses the impact of technology on our society. His writings covered a wide range of subjects, from the impact of television on early education to the privacy and identity politics of the internet. neil postman books Postman wrote seven influential books on contemporary social issues like information, technology, culture and the human mind, all linked to his work in communications.
